CBS This Morning Laughs at Fox News Mockery, But Guess Who …

May 19th, 2012

Matthew Balan noted earlier today that CBS This Morning loved Jay Leno’s joke that Chris Matthews offered so many wrong answers on “Jeopardy!” he was offered a job at Fox News.” We’re not so sure Charlie Rose should be laughing it up at Fox when not only is CBS’s perpetually low-rated morning show getting thumped by ABC and NBC, but is even getting spanked by a cable morning show — on Fox.

TV By The Numbers reports reported that Nielsen’s latest numbers that came out just yesterday noted that for 18 weeks straight, “Fox & Friends” has been beating CBS This Morning in total viewers in five of the Top 20 markets around the country. Not only have these same market leads sustained for all 18 weeks, since CBS re-launched this new program,  but FOX & Friends is now also beating what CBS in the key advertising demo (25-54) in Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta and Detroit. But CBS is still boasting to advertisers.

According to TV Newser, CBS chief Les Moonves insisted at the network’s “upfront” presentation to advertisers at Carnegie Hall that the current show is “the best broadcast we have ever had in the morning.” By the numbers, that wouldn’t be much of a boast. The new show continues to draw ratings below “The Early Show” it replaced when compared to the same period a year ago.

In his introductory speech, Moonves said, “At CBS News there is a true renaissance going on under the leadership of [CBS News chairman] Jeff Fager and [CBS news president] David Rhodes, and we are thrilled with the results.” CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler added, “It is a distinctive broadcast that is getting our day off to its best start in decades.”

No wonder TV writers seem to have a permanent cynical smirk in the tone of their copy.

Bangalore Start-up Promises Unbiased News, Cheaply – NYTimes …

May 16th, 2012

A long, winding staircase ends on the seventh floor of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corp. building in Yashwantpur, Bangalore. At the entrance to Public TV, a new Kannada-language network, rows of green plants greet visitors. Like everything else at the TV station, the potted plants were purchased from an abandoned enterprise — in this case, a software firm.

“I got these lights for just 40 rupees each (76 U.S. cents) when Wipro closed one of its branches in Bangalore,” said H.R. Ranganath, chairman and managing director of Public TV, pointing at the ceiling.

“These cubicles, which my reporters and editors use, were bought from a shut-down office of Kingfisher,’’ he added, while doors were purchased from a Siemens branch that closed. Salvaging equipment from failed companies was the only way that Mr. Ranganath was able to create an independent TV network, free from corporate or political influence.

Mr. Ranganath, 45, has been a journalist for 25 years in the southwest state of Karnataka, where Kannada is the official language. He was the editor in chief of a Kannada-language daily, Kannada Prabha, and the editorial head of a regional news channel, Suvarna.

The state of Karnataka has seven Kannada-language news channels; out of those, six have overt backing from political or business leaders.

In November 2011, Mr. Ranganath came up with the idea of starting a Kannada-language television channel without any political or corporate financing. “If software professionals can do Infosys, then why can’t we journalists start a self-financed company?” he wondered.

According to Mr. Ranganath, the cost of starting up a regional television news channel in Karnataka is anywhere from 45 to 50 crores, or 450 million to 500 million rupees ($8.5 million to $9.4 million). He figured that if he could cut capital and operational costs at least in half, then he would be able to build a network without any outside financial help.

He was able to get Public TV to begin broadcasting in March by investing less than 10 crores, or 100 million, rupees, financed by himself and Arun Kumar, the network’s chief executive, who used to run  a construction business. Mr. Ranganath also said his operational costs are only 30 percent of his rivals’ costs.

For a few months, Mr. Ranganath and his staff went hunting for used equipment from shuttered television stations across the country. “We bought the cameras we use for 200,000 rupees each,” said Shashi Deshpande, facilities manager at Public TV. “Each of them would have cost us one million or more if purchased new.”

The Public TV office also has three fully equipped studios, which can expand to six if a few chairs and background sets are moved around. No more than a few thousand rupees have been spent on each of these sets.

Mr. Ranganath kept operational costs down by hiring fresh college graduates to fill 80 percent of the 200 or so staff positions. “That means some pressure on the 20 percent senior, experienced people on board, but someone’s got to give the new graduates a chance,” he said.

On the day that the channel began operations in March, Mr. Ranganath declared on the air that the public was free to check his and Mr. Kumar’s assets to make sure that there was no illegal money involved in starting the channel. “I don’t want anyone to question my credentials,” Mr. Ranganath said. “In any case, the viewers should know who is giving them their daily dose of news.”

The ratings reports for the past two months show that Public TV has been struggling to gain popularity. But Mr. Ranganath said that he was not worried and that the network was already planning to expand its operations.

“We are No. 5 or 6 among the seven channels,” he said. “We will surely do better as time progresses.”

Viewers said they liked the network’s transparency and commitment to integrity. “I am impressed by Public TV as it has no overt political connections,” said Shiva Prasad, 45, a resident of Bangalore. “If they improve on their news presentation, I would love to watch them regularly.”

Jerry Brown On California Budget Shortfall: 'We Will Have To Go …

May 13th, 2012

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California’s budget deficit has swelled to a projected $16 billion – much larger than had been predicted just months ago – and will force severe cuts to schools and public safety if voters fail to approve tax increases in November, Gov. Jerry Brown said Saturday.

The Democratic governor said the shortfall grew from $9.2 billion in January in part because tax collections have not come in as high as expected and the economy isn’t growing as fast as hoped for. The deficit has also risen because lawsuits and federal requirements have blocked billions of dollars in state cuts.

“This means we will have to go much farther and make cuts far greater than I asked for at the beginning of the year,” Brown said in an online video. “But we can’t fill this hole with cuts alone without doing severe damage to our schools. That’s why I’m bypassing the gridlock and asking you, the people of California, to approve a plan that avoids cuts to schools and public safety.”

Brown did not release details of the newly calculated deficit Saturday, but he is expected to lay out a revised spending plan Monday. The new plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1 hinges in large part on voters approving higher taxes.

The governor has said those tax increases are needed to help pull the state out of a crippling decade shaped by the collapse of the housing market and recession. Without them, he warned, public schools and colleges, and public safety, will suffer deeper cuts.

“What I’m proposing is not a panacea, but it goes a long way toward cleaning up the state’s budget mess,” Brown said.

Democrats, who control the Legislature, have resisted Brown’s proposed cuts so far this year. Republican lawmakers criticized the majority party for building in overly optimistic tax revenues.

“Today’s news underscores how we must rein in spending and let our economy grow by leaving overburdened taxpayers alone,” said Assembly Republican leader Connie Conway in a statement.

The governor pursued a ballot initiative because Republican lawmakers would not provide the votes needed to reach the two-thirds legislative majority required to raise taxes.

Assembly Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles, acknowledged that lawmakers have “limited and difficult choices left to solve the deficit.” Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said he wasn’t surprised by the deficit spike given that state tax revenue have fallen $3.5 billion below projections in the current year.

“We will deal with it,” Steinberg said Saturday. “And we know that more cuts are inevitable but we will do our very, very best to save more than we lose, especially for those in need.”

Under Brown’s tax plan, California would temporarily raise the state’s sales tax by a quarter-cent and increase the income tax on people who make $250,000 or more. Brown is projecting his tax initiative would raise as much as $9 billion, but a review by the nonpartisan analyst’s office estimates revenue of $6.8 billion in fiscal year 2012-13.

Supporters of the “Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012″ say the additional revenue would help maintain current funding levels for public schools and colleges and pay for programs that benefit seniors and low-income families. It also would provide local governments with a constitutional guarantee of funding to comply with a new state law that shifts lower-level offenders from state prisons to county jails.

A second tax hike headed for the November ballot is being promoted by Los Angeles civil rights attorney Molly Munger, whose initiative would raise income taxes on a sliding scale for nearly all wage-earners to help fund schools.

Anti-tax groups and Republican lawmakers say both tax increases will hurt California’s economic recovery. State GOP Chairman Tom Del Beccaro has embarked on a statewide campaign to discuss alternatives to Brown’s tax hikes.

The governor is expected to propose a contingency plan with a list of unpopular cuts that would kick in automatically if voters reject tax hikes this fall. In January, he said they would result in a K-12 school year shortened by up to three weeks, higher college tuition fees and reduced funding for courts.

India news: Goa Cricket Association's finances under scrutiny | India …

May 13th, 2012

The Goa state government has ordered an investigation into the finances of the Goa Cricket Association (GCA) after two local clubs affiliated to the GCA lodged a complaint alleging incidents of fraud.

On May 1, the State Registration Department set up a committee comprising Chetan Desai, a former GCA secretary, and retired bureaucrat Anil Lavandis to probe the allegations and gave them 15 days to complete the task. The government has also asked the GCA not to take any financial decisions until the investigation is over.

Desai, who is leading the investigation, told ESPNcricinfo that the GCA is not co-operating and that he might be forced to involve the police to obtain the information he needs. “They are not acting in a very co-operative manner,” he said. “They have kept the association closed for four days. They cited security reasons but we have held so many camps, including women’s camps, and there has never been a security problem.”

Desai said he wrote to the association secretary on May 7 requesting all the financial documents for the last year but has received no response. Given that the government has asked him to submit a report on the association’s finances by May 15, he said he might be forced to resort to using the police to gain access to the offices of the association if GCA officials continued to prevent him from doing his job.

In addition to the allegations of fraud, the GCA has also been accused of illegally constructing a new building. Earlier this week Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte asked the government to set up a second investigation team to examine “irregularities” relating to the construction of the new building. Khaunte claimed he had documents to prove the involvement of association secretary Prasad Phaterpekar, as well as other members, and that he would file a first information report (FIR) against them.

Calls to the GCA were not returned. The association is headed by Dayanand Narvekar, a former BCCI vice-president and a former state minister.

Dodson said he’ll be on the shelf for 6-to-7 weeks, which shouldn’t affect booking him against his next 125-pound opponent this summer.
